183-185 Hatteras, NC-Morehead City, NC-Sneads Ferry, NC-Southport, NC
The first day of this multi-day post was mainly spent taking ferries. First from Hatteras to Ocracoke and then again from Ocracoke to Cedar Island where it was a long afternoon ride to Morehead City. I am not a fan of riding late in the day but it couldn’t be helped today. Luckily for me I ran in two wonderful couples from Montreal, Quebec. It was a blast talking with them and sharing my stories and drawings.
On the second day google maps gives me directions that included a restricted route. As the alternative would add another 20 miles to the days ride I decided to risk it, most likely is was a toll or something I could easily get around. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The restricted access route just so happened to be Marine Corp Base Camp Lejune. Thinking it was similar to Camp Pendleton, where you can ride through it with no problem, I asked the gate guard if I could pass and he said know. He asked if I had ID and I said all I had was my VA card. He then said “Oh your prior service?” I said yup and he let me through. It was a nice quiet 16 mile ride through Camp Lejune to Snead’s Ferry where I stopped for the night.
Today’s ride was great, a nice tail wind and warm sunny skies. I had planned on stopping north of the ferry in Carolina Beach but the riding was going so well I decided to keep going across the ferry and on to Southport.
Tomorrow reunites me with Myrtle Beach and then more familiar territory as I make the final push to Florida. I Am looking forward to seeing how different these places are since the late 90s when I was stationed in Georgia.
I will also try to get better with my writing, I would like to craft better stories around my days and need to carve out the time to do them. It’s a work in progress and I thank you for joining me as I move through this journey.
Thanks
