Day 17 Lavington-Fauquier
After a great nights sleeps. I got on the road early at about 7. My host was Leonard a dairy farmer so he was up and off to work at 3:30am (and I thought I was an early bird!). Another rainy day it seems so after saying goodbye to the farm I set off on Highway 6.
The road was nice a pretty quiet as it was Victoria Day so no logging trucks were zipping by me. I stopped in Lumby fro some provisions and breakfast. It was nothing to write about for sure but the coffee was hot and it was good to get out of the rain.
Back on Highway 6 for what seemed like forever. I also skipped my planned camp site as I was not in the mood to set up camp and sit in the rain all day. After a while I regretted that decision as my legs were starting to give out. Right around the 70km mark I came around a bend on a climb and off the side of the road about 30 yards away I encountered my first bear of the trip, a big brown momma. She looked my way and licked her chops I saw that she was thinking about chasing me and I had my first out shit moment. Luckily for me she got bored and turned off into the woods. I wanted to get a picture but as I was tired and going uphill I decided to keep my skin and kick it into high gear.
That bear motivated a second wind and I made great time up to the summit.
After what seemed forever I hit another milestone Monashee Summit Elev: 1241m.
The best thing about a huge climb like that is there is usually an equally huge downhill on the other side. Monashee did not disappoint I got up to 75kmh on the downhill and it was super fun. Also on the other side the scenery changed a bit.
The last few km’s to my ferry were pretty brutal as my legs were shot but I finally made it to the ferry stop and luckily for me just up the road on the other side was the Tukaluk Campground where I stayed for the night. THe host was super friendly and very nice, she gave me the spot and firewood for 10 bucks!
