Day 182 Kitty Hawk, NC-Hatteras, NC
The generosity of Tom and Linda continued after a wonderful nights sleep. This included more conversation and a nice breakfast to get me on my way energized and ready for the day. Tom also took the time to true up my rear wheel wish was fantastic as it was something that was on my mind for some time. Now I’m a fairly good bike mechanic and able to fix just about anything on the road, wheel have always eluded me. It is now on my list of things to learn, Tom has inspired me to figure out this mystery.
Today was the first day since leaving the mountains fro Calgary that I have had such an assist from nature. With a consistent tailwind the whole day I was able to aver 20 MPH as I quickly covered the distance to Hatteras in record time.
It was an interesting day. A stop at the Wright Brothers monument (where they achieved flight) was inspiring. Riding along the Outer Banks was the first time I really noticed all the damage from hurricane Matthew with the shuttered businesses and piles of damaged possessions and buildings along the roadside (I’m not sure what was more disturbing all this distruction or the amount of Trump signs I see everywhere). And the road leading up to the Oregon Inlet reminded me of the middle east, because the wind was so strong the sand was streaming across the road in massive mesmerizing swirls.
I booked a room in a hotel in Hatteras. Upon arriving I noticed I’m the only guest, the entire first floor of rooms are open and gutted after all the water damage. The FEMA headquarters is just up the road and I’m surrounded by the aftermath of hurricane Matthew. Luckily everything works in my room and it looks like I’ll have a nice rest for another long riding day tomorrow.
With that I’m going to do a bit of relaxing now. Talk to you guys soon!
