Today started out great. I broke down camp said goodbye to my neighbors for the hospitality.
And headed on my way down the road. After stopping for breakfast in Castle Rock I got on this nice road for about 12 miles.
Which brought me to highway 4 and the great Columbia River. Hi Columbia River!
Highway 4 way long and grueling with all the logging trucks flying by for hours. Stopped here at the County Line park that overlooks the Columbia for a refuel break.
Cathlamet was a neat little town but I was determined to get to Oregon. So I plugged on. Crossed over to Puget Island which was a complete change of scenery. A neat laid bad community.
Here is the view while waiting for the ferry to get me to Oregon.
And here’s me clearly looking confused on the Ferry to Westport.
Westport was a neat town too. I was looking for a welcome sign but didn’t see one anywhere! My body was telling me I should stop but I decided to truck on and maybe camp down the road.
Right away there was an enormous climb up to Caltrop Crest which had me regretting my decision to continue on.
The next 22 miles into Astoria were horrible. It was pouring rain all the way and my fitness was failing. My right leg wasn’t having it anymore, my left knee was still mad from having my saddle out of adjustment and my left achilles was telling me hell no. But I had to at least make it too Astoria as there was absolutely no place to stop.
Finally made it to my destination! The Astoria Riverwalk Inn. I decided to take a rest day here in Astoria, the last 5 days riding have taken its toll and my body has made it clear that it needs a break to recover. This decision most likely will impact my schedule but if I hope to finish this journey it is sorely needed.
This view also helped my decision 🙂
Anyway that’s the end of day 5 and also one state down. See you later Washington! Two to go, and one is really long.
I do have a question for anyone with rural Washington experience. What are those little guard shacks everybody had at the entrance to their property?
