Days 107-108 Miramichi-Shediac
Day 107
Miramichi is a working class kind of town (which means lodging options are scare) and with the air show in town all available rooms were booked up. I was lucky enough to find a hostel tucked away on an old converted Air Base.
IT was not the best of facilities, not in the brothel or crack house sort of way but more like a half-way house for degenerates (so I fit right in 🙂
I got an early start t the day after realizing that my previous distance estimate was about 30km short. As I was trying to figure my route out of the Air Base this Austrailian guy comes out and we have a nice chat about travelling and biking. He hitched from Mexico to the Artic circle, which I think is nuts (mostly on the depends on other peoples generosity.
He seemed like a cool dude and we were comparing routes to Newfoundland with the fire alarm starts going off. He gives me a look for a second and says Oh shit and takes off upstairs. That was my cue to start pedaling, hope the retirement community next door doesn’t think I set it off and am fleeing.
It was a long day to Shediac, not too much climbing but from shear exhaustion. My legs are shot after 5 100km+ days and I’m looking forward to a rest day.
I did happen to meet the Worlds Largest Lobster coming into town and the Surly wouldn’t let me go on without a glamour shot. Such a vain bike!
Day 108
The BnB I booked ended up costing me more than I thought with a little bait and switch action but I was too tired to argue it out and for $20 I’m not going to lose sleep over it. The downside is it is located on the not so nice side of town where tourist towns put there McDonalds and boat supplies companies.
Nonetheless today after a short ride to the beach I have done pretty much nothing physical and have spent all day drawing, so an amazing day of rest.
My experience in New Brunswick is hard to quantify, for the most part people have been nice but there is something off to me, maybe it’s the trip. I will say I am looking forward to leaving and getting to Prince Edward Island tomorrow and in no time this part of my journey will be over.
IT’s not over yet though so I’ll see you guys in PEI…
