Days 114-117 Port Hood-Margaree Forks-North Sydney-Sydney
It has been a few days since I blogged mainly because of weather.
I had stopped in Port Hood the day before as it was horrible day of rainy riding that was coupled with the onset of a nice little cold.
When I woke up that little cold was not so little anymore which made for a not so fun day and forced me to change my plans for the day and do a shorter ride to not push the immune system to far so a stop in Margaree Forks was just right as it was a nice 70km and the closest hotel I could find to recover indoors.
Once I got settled settled it started raining and here is where my plans changed. A study of the forecast told me that rain and clouds were expected for the handle of Cape Breton for the next 4 days. 3 of those days were slated for a nice epic tour of the splendor that is the Cabot Trail. With all the weather I decided to cut the Cabot trail and head towards north Sydney instead (North Sydney is where I will catch the ferry to Newfoundland).
After a long wet ride with a kilometer of climbing I finally made it to North Sydney where I will have a rest day before catching the ferry on Wednesday to Newfoundland.
The second plans change came after a nice conversation with my old tour buddies the Ruru’s who were a day behind me. We decided to team up and book a place in Sydney and take the Sunday ferry, which will give us time to hire a car and drive the Cabot Trail before we all head over and finish the Coast to Coast cycle tour of Canada (hard to believe it’s almost over).
So tomorrow (Friday) we’ll head out to the Cabot trail stay a night halfway and finish up and return the car on Saturday and prep for the 18 hour boat ride to Argentia, NL for the last 150km to St. Johns NL.
Until then I will leave you with the few photos I was able to take in between all the raindrops of late.
Even the signs were telling me that riding the Cabot Trail was a lost cause due to weather
Perfect day for a rest day, it has been raining all day…
The world’s largest fiddle…
Fun day
Postponed
Love it.
More great photos ken, you probably have left on your journey of the Cabot trail but if you see this message, You have to check out the “Skyline trail”… easy little hike which is well marked and maintained. the views (and wind) are spectacular . hope the weather clears up for you
Funny you should mention the Skyline Ken. We hired a car to drive the Cabot and just passed the Skyline and decided against it because the weather is so bad right now. Going to stay in Pleasant Bay and do the other have tomorrow. Hoping for better weather. Hope all is well
