Days 127-131 St. Johns-Bonavista-Elliston-Trinity East-St. John’s
After saying the goodbyes to the new friends I’ve met who also crossed Canada on a bike I had some time set aside to do a bit of exploring before I head off down the Atlantic Coast.
After some tips, pointers and a few minutes of mulling it over I decided that my time was best spent chasing those elusive puffins. So off to Bonavista a coastal town 300km north of St. John’s.
Bonavista has some claims to fame as the Queen has jubiliee’d there twice and Ben Affleck calls some residents family. Now I know what your thinking and whatever side you fall on the Ben Affleck debate the point here is that Bonavista is a pretty damn cool town and worth a visit if your ever in these parts of the world.
The hostel in Bonavista was great and my impromtu tour guides Jitka and Lief were a blast to hang out with. Besides the fun Ben Affleck trivia you all wanted to know I was informed that iceburgs hang out in the area until June when they make there long trek out to sea. Now that would be a sight, this calls for a return visit in the wintertime (aurora boreales, iceburgs, whales and snow).
I took a short trip to Elliston where there is a puffin viewing site. Apparently they hang out on a rock that is about 100ft from the shore and let you watch from there. Unfortunately my luck with Canadian namesake wild creatures extends to these migratory clowns as well. No puffins…no moose…no caribou…le sigh
Undeterred I decided to trek over to Trinity East another little coastal town that sports the Skerwink Trail. A 5.3km trail that follows the coast along the penisula. It was absolutely stunning! Being on the ocean, and seeing the effects of the waters might is truly breathtaking.
Now I’m back in St. Johns getting things ready for the trip south tomorrow which starts with a nice 134km ride to another 16 hour ferry ride to Nova Scotia and on towards Halifax.
I’ll see you guys out there…
Incredible!
Ya Evie, Newfoundland is an incredible place for sure 🙂
