Days 132-134 St. Johns-St. Peters-Port Hastings
Newfoundland was really sad to see me go, it was evident in all the tears she shed from those big beautiful skyies and it did bot take long before I had water all over my face too!
Needless to say it was quite a brutal ride to the ferry with frequent doubts popping into my head whether I would actually make the ferry or not. Luckily I did and lucky for my fellow passengers I found a glorious shower on the ship that was just magic.
I did meet an very impressive young man on the ferry travelling home with his grandfather. AN impromptu conversation turned into being inspired by this young mans passion for photography, not being a photographer I avoided the you should do this talk and focused more on encouraging him to share his work along with a few business pointers I wish I knew years ago (never work for free and always use a contract).
We all had a great conversation about life, what makes someone want to ride a bike around the Americas, addiction and a myriad of other topics. I came away happy, fulfilled and inspired from this conversation. Talking with them has made me realize that it’s not just the places I go that I should share but why I go and what I get out of it and why that is the real meat of the story. So I now have a new mandate for these posts, lets see how it goes.
As for the past few days ride I am now in Port Hastings and it still doesn’t feel like I have started my Atlantic Coast journey (even though the legs are more than aware that we are three days into it). I think that will change once I get to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia tomorrow, that will mark the end of backtracking the steps I took to get to Newfoundland and put me back on an unknown path moving forward.
A stop at Rita’s Tea Room on the way to St. Peters was a surreal experience. Rita MacNeil is a Canadian folk singer who has achieved much success in here career. She always ended here shows by inviting people to her house in Cape Breton for tea, so many people showed up she opened up here tea room which has an over the top self promotion of Dollywood with the same amount of awesome. Basically I felt like I was in a Golden Girls episode!
I finally found a puffin! Apparently they like hanging out on the highway and gorging themselves on A&W 🙂
