Days 143-144 Yarmouth-Portland, ME, USA
As I sit in the ferry terminal waiting for my final transport out of Canada and a return to my home country (even if it’s just for a few months) I hear the familiar gibberish in the background, and a slow turn of the head revealed the improbable source. If you have read through this blog as I traveled across Canada you would notice a recurring set of players. You guessed it my Kiwi friends I first met in British Columbia so long ago are on the same ferry to the states, Uncanny! It is only fitting to leave Canada with my adopted Mum and Dum 🙂
I hope he made it out alive! Do you think the boat got it too.
These a many other questions were exchanged between us when just off the coast of Portland, ME the captain came over the squawk box to let us know that the boat sucked up something in it’s engines and we were going to reverse to try and dislodge it. The timing was right because we had just passed a small fishing boat.
Luckily we got rolling and the fisherman was fine and more importantly the boat got rolling again and we were soon in Portland, ME where I said goodbye for something like the tenth time to the Ruru’s leaving them to potential foreign citizen detainment as they process US Customs.
While they were getting the rubber glove treatment I was getting a lungful of octane rich exhaust and a headache from the annoying blather from the 4 Harley Davidson motorcycles surrounding me as I made the slow trudge towards the customs booth with the bike.
Portland, ME is a great town and after riding around Old Port a little bit I headed for my host Nancy, who with her roommate Jason were kind enough to put me up for the night. After introductions and an instant rapport I was saying how cool it would be to stay another day to check out the town. No problem was the response, Awesome!
I had a great time running around town, the library and various coffee shops. Portland has a great energy about it and I felt instantly comfortable. As a bonus I got some work done, Yay progress!
last morning in Canada. It has been amazing, thanks for everything!
