Days 189-191 Charleston, SC-Savannah, GA
South Carolina is a terrifying place to ride a bike. It was a 110 miles from Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA and I committed to doing it in one day because I couldn’t bear riding another day in South Carolina. I must say the people have been amazing but it seems that once they get in the car they are absolutely oblivious to their surroundings. It might be due to the fact that every driver is on the phone or texting. In other words scary!!!
So it was nice to make it to Georgia, not because the drivers are any better here, mainly because having lived in the state for a time it feels familiar. Savannah was new to me though and what a magical city it is. The historical downtown area is a gem with all the pocket parks that divide the streets in a grid. The result of this is that around just about every corner is this little oasis of southern charm.
I also found a little piece of home here. Living in Seattle has spoiled me what a coffee shop could be (no not Starbucks!) and I luckily stumbled across Foxy Loxy in Savannah that has been a little piece of home in that they have great coffee, fantastic music, and cozy comfortable places to work. I stopped here yesterday to get some work done and struck up a conversation with Esther about time and priorities and live changes. what an enjoyable conversation, some people are just easy to talk to and before you know it off she went to go photograph a wedding and I was off to ride around the city.
So it was a happy coincidence that I needed a place to work on this post and decided that Foxy Loxy was the place to due it. Who should I sit next to? You guessed it, Esther and in true small town fashion, we had another fun conversation about family, perceptions and general kindness. I couldn’t think of a better way to cap of my time in Savannah than with conversation with a new friend.
Tomorrow starts the short journey to Orange Park, FL where I’ll be based while I figure out the visa and travel plans for Cuba and beyond. I must say that after 6 months on the road I am looking forward to a little familiarity and routine even if it’s only for a short time. There is no time for complacency though so I’ll have plenty to share with you all about my continuing journey.
Beautiful photos and writings Ken!
Thank you Carol 🙂 I appreciate you checking it out
I absolutely love the trees there. Too bad you couldn’t hang out longer in Savannah, the Lucas marquee has Jonny Lang playing on Nov 20th, he is worth seeing.
Safe journey to Florida 🙂
