Days 54-56 Portage la Prairie-Winnipeg
The ride from Portage la Prairie to Winnipeg was nice and pleasant which a fair tailwind to get me most of the way to the city. Most of it was on the highway which for all its convenience lacks notable landmarks to stops and admire. There where a few though.
There shouldn’t be too much more of the flat prairies for me, as I will soon be heading into more interestign terrain as I get closer to Ontario.
I found the White Horse just miming on this pedestal outside of Winnipeg.
After a long ride through town I finally made it to my hotel on the South side of the City. Here’s a few of downtown from my window. Should be a good view for the fireworks on Canada Day (July 1, 2016).
I had some errands to run and some things to replace that I lost along the way, like gloves and a jacket. I also had planned on visiting a Dr. to see about my acute stomach pain but thankfully it has been feeling a lot better so I just decided to monitor it on my own for now.
Winnipeg has changed quite a bit since I was here last some 25 years ago. It has grown a lot and with Canada’s welcoming view of immigrants the diversity in the city is exciting, which brings a lot of quality international food (I had great Iranian food last night) choices that have been lacking so far in the towns I’ve been through.
I found Marlon Brando in a little house here in town.
I also ran into Ghandi on the way to the Human Rights Museum.
Just across from the Human Rights museum is the train station and as I was walking though to get some lunch I ran into these two guys from Montreal who were hopping a train to Vancouver to ride back east. They had a cool homemade trike that was really comfortable. It was fun talking with fellow travelers and after wishing them well and safe travels off I went to eat.
Which brings us to today July 1st Canada Day! I went to the cool street party which is geared more towards the cool kids in town as well the celebration at The Forks which was more family oriented. I left mid-afternoon, to get ready for the road tomorrow, and I’m sure I’ll be missing out on the fun as these things get better as it gets later. But, I’ll be able to see the fireworks from my windows so I’ll probably update this post before I leave i the morning.
And on a side note, this bastard has been harassing me within a 6 block radius around my hotel.
He has been following ans swooping down on me from pole to pole along with a couple of friends, all the while caw cawing like there is no tomorrow. Can’t say I’ll miss this jerk when I leave but it makes me wonder what I did to him.
Some time ago I was studying birds and their behavior and these experts were talking specifically about crows and how they have a photographic memory of all the faces they have ever seen. What was really interesting was that they can somehow convey that information to other crows who will be able to recognize you even though they themselves have never seen you before. So I think this guy must be a distant cousin who got my face from some jerk in Seattle.
So tomorrow is back to the road for me, heading east. So until next time, Happy Canada Day everybody!
I really love the White Horse Plain story & the Human Rights Museum is beautiful. Glad you are feeling a bit better. Be nice to as many crows as you can from now on, toss them some crumbs or something. Crow Karma is real 😉
You are covering ground fast! Happy Canada Day Ken
Thanks Jeri! I like that the horse couldn’t be caught. Luckily my way out tomorrow goes the opposite direction of mean crows home 🙂
