Days 70-72 Wawa-Montreal River Harbour-Sault Ste. Marie-Bruce Mines
This is a multi-day post due to exhaustion and lack of internet.
After a restful night in Wawa where I reunited with the Ruru’s which was nice after meeting them so early in the tour. We both decided to stop at the same place down the road, about halfway to Sault Ste. Marie.
The road from wawa started out looking like it would be a miserable weather day but lucky for me it was quite different and turned out to be an absolutely lovely day and ride.
The only downside came about 35km out of Montreal River Harbour when but broken Brooks saddle decided to break again this time the other support bar. I was able to get it back to riding condition I was able to limp into the Twilight Resort where it was a pleasant sight to see the Ruru’s and that they had secured a cabin for the night that included a room for yours truly. It was a lovely spot with a deck that overlooked Lake Superior and with the lovely day it was an equally lovely evening and sunset.
Not a bad spot to have lunch even if your having bike issues 🙂
lway like to come across this sign, it clearly state your going to have a fun fast downhill!
Not a bad view and a beautiful way to end the day.
The next morning was the second half to Sault Ste. Marie. We all got an early start and the views were just as epic as yesterday. I started out the day with a borrowed seat from my fellow tourer Brent but it prove to stiff and I decided to swap back to my broken Brooks and keep the racing saddle for when it finally gives out for good. We ran into some funny touring guys, one from Scotland and the other from England and they had some high energy. They also did not care about safety as they road off on the two-lane highway side by side without helmets, and we could hear the horns honking as they road off. We think that they got a talking too or a ticket soon after as about 40 Ontario Provincial Police motorcycles rode by shortly after they rounded the bend.
About tow thirds of the way to Sault Ste. Marie we ran into Sherri and BIll whom the Ruru’s met yesterday. They invited us all over to there lake house for lunch. How can you turn down that kind of hospitality. It was lovely talking with then and enjoying there epic view. They were very warm and welcoming people and it’s always inspiring to be around be that live life rather than react to it.
Here’s Bill and Sherri Boston at their home in Batchawana Bay
And here is their backyard!
After some time we got back on the road for the last 60km to Ste. Marie. Along the way I broke my chain which is never fun and after a rough end of a long day we got into Sault Ste. Marie at 6pm. Unfortunately the bike shop was closed so I was’t able to get my seat or bike back in order, and with tomorrow being Sunday I would have to wait till Monday to get it done. Not an option in my book.
After such a long day we all checked into a hotel and planned to meet up for a celebration dinner after having made it around the top of lake superior (5 days by bike). The steak was delicious and filling which amplified the tiredness of the body, so once back to the hotel it was straight to bed for this guy, hence the multi-day post 🙂
This morning was very leisurely getting a late start on the road leaving Sault Ste. Marie at 9:30 which was just fine after the limited recovery time from the day before. I was happy to get out of town and back on the road. And I soon met back up with the Ruru’s and Martin from a few days ago as well as another mystery cyclist who didn’t stop to say hello. So there are a few of us all in the same area which I think is pretty neat.
THe road out of town went through Garden River First Nation, home of a band of the Ojibwa peoples. It’s reminder that all this land belonged to the first nations peoples, all of us immigrants shouldn’t shy away from that and learn more about the native people’s and maybe help them hold on to their customs and traditions. I for one am fascinated and interested in learning more.
Along the way we ran into a group of Amish families and a convoy of horse drawn buggies.
And here is Bruce Mines home for the night after a short day on the bike. I’ve decided to cut early to recover and to get back on a normal riding schedule. I will be slowing down as I head east from this point to really enjoy the scenery on this side of the country. As I am more than halfway across Canada at this point and will soon be in Quebec of which I have heard nothing but good things about the experience and people. The same goes for Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. I am exciting about whats too come and I’ll share it all with you 🙂
Until then…
