Days 80-82 Toronto+
DAY 2:
The ride from the airport to downtown was great. Toronto has some wonderful bikeways and it’s always nice to get of main streets see the neighborhoods.
The first order of business was to get the bike fixed (new chain/cassette and a new seat). I had planned to get the repairs done at Sweet Pete’s as I heard nothing but good things about them. My experience however was quite different. The repair guy was indifferent and said it would be two days before they could fit me in, then turned around and walked off. I understand shops are busy and people are waiting. But for a 15 minute job for someone who is travelling through and needs a quick repair I would make the effort and at least try to triage and accommodate.
Luckily for me Bike Depot was right down the street. I walked in and the mechanic stopped working on a bike to ask what I needed. I explained my situation and even before I finished he had the other bike put aside and mine on the stand with him saying that it’ll only take a few minutes anyway.
So while he was fixing my bike I was just happy and chatting about touring and riding in general. Bonus they also carried my Brooks so I picked up a new saddle too. I definitely recommend Bike Depot if your ever in Toronto and need anything bike related.
After getting the bike fixed is was a glorious ride all over the city. Toronto is such a fun city to bike in, Other might disagree saying it’s too dangerous. It had a New York kind of feel with big streets (sometimes a bike lane 🙂
DAY 3:
I also to the 3 1/2 hour train/bus to Niagara Falls (I’ve never been there and would hate myself if I was this close and didn’t go).
And the falls didn’t dissapoint, it was magical even with a bazillion people swarming around. After spending some time in awe I started to head back to Toronto, the city of Niagara Falls itself is not very interesting at least to me.
Once back downtown I went to St. Lawrence Market which was an awesome spot. I stopped at Carousel Bakery for a Peameal Bacon Sandwich on recommendation and it did not dissapoint, it was absolutely delicious!
Then I walked around town stopping at a few places where I needed to pick some things up.
Day 4:
So ends my Toronto journey. I’m spending the day relaxing and getting things ready for the road again tomorrow morning.
Sorry to hear of your Sweet Pete’s experience. I’ve never had a issue with them but as i’ve experienced with bike mechanics over the years, some of them just don’t give a flying ****. On retrospect, I should have just sent you straight to my usual shop. Given the amount of money I’ve dropped in there over the years they probably would have gone and picked you up. The guy I was talking to via FB at Sweet Pete’s was going to go check out your blog so the message may get through.
Safe travels Ken. Glad you enjoyed yourself in the 6ix.
Thanks Mike! Toronto has been absolutely great. Sweet Pete’s as a shop I’m sure is great, I must have just caught the mechanic before lunch. The main thing is everything got sorted and I’m ready for the road again. Thanks for all the tips! Plus that sandwich at Carousel was fantastic!!! 🙂
Next sandwich recommendation is smoked meat at Schwartz’s in Montreal. Saint-Laurent Boulevard. Just hold your nose over the fact it’s currently owned by Celine Dion
Fantastic! not the Celine Dion part 😉
Hey Mike are you on the Facebook?
